Prevention Tips

Car safety tips

At AJA insurances, keeping you safe is our top priority.   That’s why we’ve compiled a list of handy tips and advice to help you reduce the risks when driving in bad weather. This way you’ll be better prepared to deal with hazardous road conditions.  And remember, heavy rain, icy roads and snow can cause even the best drivers to make mistakes.

  • Be seen – make sure your headlights are on.
  • Increase your following distance.
  • Slow down! It takes longer to brake on slippery roads – the lower your speed, the easier it is to stop.
  • Make sure your car is prepared for the road conditions: check your battery, antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, windshield wipers, headlights and tires.
  • Make sure you obey the law and drive with winter tires.  They significantly improve traction in bad weather.
  • Use caution at intersections. Don’t assume that if you have the right of way the intersection will be clear – scan ahead to spot potential hazards.
  • Check your mirrors more frequently and set them correctly to minimize blind spots. Rain on your outside mirrors and rear window can distort your view or make things harder to see.
  • If you must drive in winter, keep your car gassed up so that the fuel lines don't freeze.
  • Clear snow completely off the car, and don’t forget to sweep the taillights and headlights too.
  • Watch out for slow-moving vehicles like snowplows, or sand and salt trucks, and don’t get too close. Also try to avoid passing these vehicles.
  • Be very careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will ice over first.
  • Have a car emergency kit handy that contains:
    • an ice scraper and a snow brush
    • a bag of sand, salt, or cat litter (for traction if you get stuck in snow)
    • warning flares or triangles
    • blankets
    • gloves or mittens
    • a flashlight and batteries
    • a first-aid kit
    • booster cables
    • non-perishable snack foods
    • a candle and matches
    • a cup in case you need to melt snow for water
